Fitness Classes

Instructor led exercise sessions for two or more people, often involving music and equipment.

This is a great way to have fun and socialise while you exercise!

Group exercise has many activities that fall into it, all of which can be put into one of nine categories; dance, dance fitness, cardio, strength & conditioning, holistic (think stretching, strengthening, mindfulness and meditation) water workouts and multi-fitness (a combination of two or more categories together).

Things you might have heard of include HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training), Zumba, Clubbercise, Aerobics, Spinning.

Why is it good for me?

Group exercise classes are a great way to get active with a group of like-minded people. Benefits will depend on the class you choose, but if you’re getting puffed out, it’s improving your cardiovascular health, if you’re lifting something, it’s improving your strength, and if you’re leaving the class feeling positive, it’s good for your mental health.

How much does it cost?

Class fees usually start from £5, prices will vary depending on the style taught as well the location and specialism of the class. You can also find many free workouts on our Active at Home page. Some classes give you the first class free, or discounts when you bring a friend.

What equipment do I need?

Supportive trainers and clothes you can move in. Any other equipment needed for the class will be provided for you.

If you’re worried about starting a group fitness class, you may be able to ring ahead and talk to the instructor. Or women - check out things like the #ThisGirlCan community on FacebookTwitter and Instagram.
