Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP)
Stand up paddle boarding (SUP) is a fun way to get out on the water, with the added benefits of a full body workout. It's also gaining widespread popularity as a competitive sport.
Why is it good for me?
SUP is great exercise. It provides a low impact workout, developing your balance working on your core, leg, back and arm strength as you try to remain upright and proper yourself in the water.
It's also a very relaxing activity once you get going, because you stand at full height on your board, it gives you a unique vantage point for viewing what’s down under the water and out on the horizon.
How much does it cost?
There are many places accross the Lake District where you can borrow a SUP, this will cost you in the region of £20 for 2 hours. You can also get coaching which will cost a little more, or join a guided paddle which will be slightly more again.
If you wish to buy equipment you are looking at considerably more, boards start at approx £350 for a starter board.
What equipment do you need?
If you want to hire a SUP, you need proper clothes that you don't mind getting wet - no jeans or demin as this will be hard to swim in. Despite your best efforts to stay balanced on your board, you’re going to fall in the water at some point.
If you wish to buy, you are going to need a board, a pump, a paddle, a leesh, a buoyancy aid and a dry bag for keeping belongings in.
