WHAT IS CROQUET?
Think you know croquet? Think again!
Forget vicar’s lawns and Alice in Wonderland, this is a summer sport of skill, strategy and tactics, suitable for anyone aged 9 to 99, able or disabled, and any background.
Similar to snooker but played on grass, you need to get your ball through the hoops before your opponent, using a mallet to strike the ball.
WHY IS IT GOOD FOR ME?
Croquet is a sport for both mind and body. While you are benefitting from gentle outdoor physical exercise, you also need to plan your strategy and adapt your tactics when things don’t go your way.
This is one of few sports where men and women can play equally as it is not based on strength. It is a sociable sport and can be played for fun with friends; you can also compete in club competitions and more seriously in tournaments, around the UK and abroad.
As your skill level improves you will learn new strategies and tactics, so you never stop learning this fascinating game. A handicap system means you could play a world champion and still be in with a chance!
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Pay & play session fees at your local club (if offered) are typically £5 per person; some clubs offer group and corporate bookings on a one-off or recurring basis.
Many clubs run open days or taster sessions in April/May, followed by a 4-6 week beginners’ course (around £25).
Club membership costs £60-£250/year, and covers all playing costs – no hidden extras!
Most clubs offer discounts in the first 1 or 2 years, with reduced rates for U25s; some clubs offer flexible memberships or a per-session fee before joining. Most clubs are open April-September, but some play year-round.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED?
Wear comfy clothes, plus trainers to avoid lawn damage; clubs provide all equipment. If you start playing regularly, you may want to buy your own mallet (£150-£400).
The Croquet Association website has all the information and details you need to play.
