Frailty And Falls Prevention

Falls and fractures are a common and serious health issue faced by older people in England. People aged 65 and older have the highest risk of falling; around a third of people aged 65 and over, and around half of people aged 80 and over, fall at least once a year. Falling is a cause of distress, pain, injury, loss of confidence, loss of independence and mortality.

Being more physically active is a key preventative factor in relation to falls risk and recovery.

Watch the presentation from Dr Angela White at our Live Longer Better in Cumbria Continuing the Movement for Active Ageing Conference (February 2025).

Angela gave a forceful overview of the importance of bone health throughout our lives, focusing particularly on the condition of osteoporosis, its prevention and indeed its reversibility. Drawing on bother her professional and personal experience, she asked the audience to consider barriers that we as professionals and practitioners might create to optimal movement and therefore ageing for our clients, patients and service users. Framing our understanding of these barriers within the ‘survival’ mechanism, she encouraged us to consider the 4 Ps od pause, process, prepare and proceed to overcome concerns and empower older adults within our spheres of influence to move more, protecting their bone health in the process.
