Ewanrigg Pupils Lead The Way At Maryport Junior Parkrun

June 4, 2025

Energy, excitement, and a whole lot of running filled the air last week as more than 120 pupils from Ewanrigg Junior School took to Maryport Promenade for a special test event ahead of the launch of the new Maryport Junior Parkrun.

The event, part of our Let’s Move! programme, marked a key milestone in preparing local children for the weekly parkrun sessions due to start soon. Designed as a "test and learn" experience, the day allowed pupils to get familiar with the route, the volunteer team, and the parkrun process - boosting their confidence and encouraging long-term participation in physical activity.

Active Cumbria Development Officer and Let’s Move Programme Lead, Cameron Wilson said, “There was some hesitation beforehand, but running alongside friends and teachers made all the difference. By the end, the children were smiling, energized, and already asking when they could come back.”

The enthusiasm was contagious, with pupils eagerly anticipating the start of regular events.

This is just the beginning - three more local schools are scheduled to take part in similar test runs in the coming weeks. The aim: to strengthen connections across schools, community partners, and health networks, creating more inclusive opportunities for children to get active and stay healthy.

With a strong start and growing momentum, Maryport Junior Parkrun is shaping up to be more than just a weekly event - it’s set to become a vibrant part of the community’s move toward healthier, more active lifestyles.
