Community Orienteering Course Launched in Flimby
October 6, 2026
A community orienteering course has been installed around the village of Flimby, Maryport.
In partnership with Active Cumbria and Flimby Primary School, Cumbria based Cross-Curricular Orienteering were commissioned to develop the project with multiple themes linked to the local area and the school curriculum.
Active Cumbria’s Let’s Move! team and Flimby Primary School have been heavily involved in bringing the idea to life, and pupils have helped shape the orienteering course content to include both curricular material and locally focused educational themes - meaning everyone can take part.
Tanya Peers, Executive Head Teacher at Flimby Primary School said, “Active learning is a key part of our curriculum and over the last couple of years we have seen the children benefit from taking part in orienteering through our in-school course.
“I had the thought that it would be fantastic if the whole community could benefit from orienteering – keeping active and learning together. We really wanted to be a part of making that happen.
“The children have enjoyed helping to create the course content. They came up with the idea of adding in a physical activity theme and seeing it in place feels really special.
“The new community course will mean the children can enjoy orienteering whilst also learning and being active at weekends, during the holidays and with their friends and family outside of the school day.”
The course is completed digitally using a mobile phone or tablet, and there is also a paper map making it fully accessible for all ages and abilities. Over forty control markers positioned around the village are scanned to reveal a question or an activity to complete before moving on to the next marker. Score boards and leader tables add an optional level of competitiveness providing reasons to return and try again. With the option to choose from a wide variety of themes, lengths and experiences, the course is guaranteed to have something suitable for everyone.
Will Huntington, Founder of Cross-Curricular Orienteering said, “It is fantastic to be launching the cross-curricular community orienteering course in Flimby.
“Taking the vision of the Head Teacher at Flimby Primary School, we’ve been able to expand orienteering beyond the school walls and develop a unique opportunity for not only young people but the whole community to experience the benefits of orienteering and keep active together throughout the year.”
This project has been made possible through Active Cumbria’s Let’s Move! programme, funded by Sport England. Let’s Move! works with local partners to help more people become active, particularly in communities facing greater health and social challenges.
Katie Butcher-Robinson, Let’s Move! Project Officer at Active Cumbria said, “Flimby cross-curricular orienteering course is the result of eighteen months of hard work, so it's wonderful to see the project coming to fruition.
“Let’s Move! has helped bring together different partners to understand the local need and create a new opportunity for residents in Flimby and the surrounding area to be more active.
“I’d like to say a huge thank you everyone involved, to the children and staff at Flimby Primary School and the Cross-Curricular Orienteering team for collaborating with us to develop something which will benefit the whole community.”
