Clear Pathways Programme Uses Active Travel to Support Employment
October 7, 2026
A pioneering programme in Barrow is helping people overcome transport barriers and take positive steps towards employment through active travel.
Established in 2025, Clear Pathways CIC partnered with the DWP and Active Cumbria's Travel Actively team after identifying that a lack of reliable transport was preventing many residents from attending appointments, training and interviews.
With funding, the programme provided participants with access to bicycles, cycle maintenance training, physical activity opportunities and wellbeing support.
Twelve people joined the first 12-week cohort, with ten completing the programme. Seven participants received new bikes, while three refurbished their own. For many, having access to a bicycle provided an affordable and reliable way to travel to training, appointments and everyday activities.
Participants reported improved confidence, greater wellbeing and increased levels of active travel. The programme also helped reduce social isolation and supported the development of new skills and positive routines.
The project has already delivered tangible outcomes, with two participants progressing into employment or education before returning to support future cohorts as peer mentors.
The success of the programme has strengthened referral pathways, attracted interest from new participants and demonstrated how active travel can contribute to wider social and economic outcomes. Clear Pathways CIC continues to work with the Travel Actively team to deliver further cohorts and secure the programme's long-term sustainability.
