As a Mum of children who play sport, I know how difficult it can be to find the right sport club or physical activity provider for your child, especially the first time. It can feel overwhelming and worrying that you are trusting your children to someone you potentially do not know.

So, what do you choose, how do you know your child will have fun and be safe?

Here are some simple tips to help you choose the right club for your child.

Did it feel like a warm welcome?

Go and have a look at the club, watch a training session with your child. Does it feel like something you would like your child to be part of? Did your child feel it was somewhere they wanted to be? The club should be able to tell you the age-range and ability for activities so you can see if it feels right for your child. If you are unsure talk to the coaches and see if they can support your child’s specific interests or any additional needs.  Visiting the club also gives your child a chance to ask any questions they might have.

Are the coaches properly qualified?

Make sure the coaches are trained to coach children. Don’t be shy to ask them for DBS checks, what safeguarding training they have had, who the first aid person is, and who you and your child can talk to if they have a worry. Most clubs will have a Club Welfare Officer or Safeguarding Officer so make sure you can get their contact details in case you need them.

Have you been asked for your consent?

If your child is under 16, the club should seek your consent for them to take part in activities, to take their photo, give first aid and who has permission to pick them up or how they get to and from the activity or club. For older children, they may seek their consent directly, but the club should let you know.

Do you know if the club is affiliated or registered with anyone?

Many physical activity and sports clubs are registered with organisations who ensure the club provides a quality session that is safe for your child. This could be the National Governing Body of a sport, the local council or Ofsted. Don’t worry about asking who they are affiliated to or registered with and question how they know they are providing the best services.
