Breaking News - Barrow on Bikes

February 21, 2025

We are thrilled to announce Barrow on Bikes, a project funded by our Travel Actively programme, is officially a registered Community Interest Company! Over the past few years Siona from the Travel Actively team has been on a mission to improve cycling provision in Barrow and make cycling accessible to all. It all began with a small group of very talented volunteers who selflessly volunteered their time to attend sessions funded by the team to upskill themselves in bike maintenance, thus creating a team of experts ready to fix the bikes of anyone in need. From then on and to this day you can find them every Friday at the Barrow Park Pavilion between 10-2 volunteering their time to work on bikes for free.

That wasn’t enough for the Barrow on Bikes volunteers, who were conscious that this project will one day end and so too will the funding. They wanted a legacy for Barrow and with that they set about creating Barrow on Bikes, a social enterprise to serve the people of Barrow. Volunteer Alan Crow takes the helm of the project with the help of Westmorland and Furness Council Support and Development Officer Kevin Bell. This project will see the cycling community of Barrow grow and come together to make sure everyone, regardless of their background, is able to access cycling.

If you would like to get involved, budding bike mechanics can register their interest for a free Basic Bike Maintenance course click here or call in at Barrow Park Pavilion on Fridays 10am-2pm.
