Love Barrow Families ‘BIG Fish’ Project

Love Barrow Families ‘BIG Fish’ Project

Love Barrow Families (LBF) had found that requests for fishing has grown significantly especially from those marginalised individuals/families on low incomes.

When COVID hit and families were struggling, this became the ideal time to create a project which enables people to be outside, active, learning new skills and spending time together as a family.

Thanks to TIEF, the BIG Fish Project was launched, and since September has engaged 100s of people across the borough from 2 to 60 years of age.

The families are all able to loan fishing equipment and then work alongside the local fishing community, learning how to cast off & the art of fishing. There is also a ‘BIG Fish monthly family fishing tournament’ which everyone can take part in.

LBF have learnt from experience that not all our families enjoy team sports and given current Covid 19 restrictions angling provides an excellent alternative that allows physical participation but across a distance.

Case Study: One family now instead of watching TV in an evening, are now choosing to go fishing as ‘Father & Son’.
