Headway South Cumbria

Project Title: Headway South Cumbria – Group Movement Sessions

Funding Received: (Phase 3: 1 April 21 - 31 March 22) £772.50

Project Outline: Headway South Cumbria is a charity that supports families who have suffered the effects of a brain injury. The charity provides support across the South Cumbria area with groups operating in the Barrow and Kendal areas.

Prior to the Covid19 pandemic members met monthly in person and took part in a range of activities however as a result of the pandemic members had to revert to holding their monthly meetings online via zoom. During this time many of the group’s members spent significant periods of time shielding due to their conditions, experiencing significant deterioration in their fitness and wellbeing levels with deconditioning becoming apparent.

As restrictions subsided members and volunteers alike were keen to explore resuming face to face activities and to include an element of physical activity. Working in partnership with the local leisure provider GLL, Headway moved their monthly meetings to Kendal Leisure Centre. Supported by the staff at the leisure centre each of their meetings included an hour of physical activity ranging from boccia, table tennis through to gentle seated circuits – all with the emphasis upon fun and social interaction!

As a result of the funding the group have been able to resume their in-person activities, increase their social interactions, and start to move that little bit more.
