Cumbria Sports Awards

Cumbria Sports Awards 2020 will be presented Live on BBC Radio Cumbria

All of the winners for 2020 have been announced, see the list of winners here. A huge congratulations to all of our winners and big thank you to BBC Radio Cumbria, our sponsors and the sporting guests presenting the awards. The videos can be viewed here

This year Cumbria Sports Awards will be slightly different, not only has the format of the awards had to change, but so has the presentation of them. However, nothing is going to stop us as the organisers from ensuring they remain to be the prestigious event that they are, as this year they take to the airwaves and announce winners live on BBC Radio Cumbria.

Long term host of Cumbria Sports Awards, BBC Radio Cumbria’s Mike Zeller will announce the winners with the support of a range of sporting guests to celebrate the efforts of Cumbria’s Sporting Sector in their community response to the coronavirus pandemic.

This year we have changed the format of the awards to showcase the great efforts that individuals from the sporting sector have made in helping their local communities. The awards given are in keeping with the usual awards, but this year recognise the impact that coronavirus has had, and the ongoing social and economic challenges being faced across the sports industry.

The winners will be announced across the week commencing Monday 23rd November, Live on BBC Radio Cumbria at 8am, the awards will be presented on the following days:

  • Monday 23 Nov - ACTIVE EDUCATION AWARD & YOUNG VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
  • Tuesday 24 Nov - COACH OF THE YEAR
  • Wednesday 25 Nov - VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
  • Thursday 26 Nov - COMMUNITY CLUB OR GROUP OF THE YEAR
  • Friday 27 Nov - BE INSPIRED AWARD

Richard Johnston, Senior Manager (Operations) at Active Cumbria said:

“We are really grateful that BBC Radio Cumbria are supporting us again this year and feel that being live on their Breakfast Show is a great alternative to a formal presentation under the circumstances.

“As a judging panel, we have been amazed by the standard of nominations we have received and would like to thank everyone who took the time to nominate. We have read many first-hand accounts of people from across the sporting sector who have been right at the forefront of the pandemic supporting our communities”.

Mike Zeller, Presenter from BBC Radio Cumbria said:

“I am honoured and delighted to be presenting the awards on my Breakfast Show, having been the awards host for many years, I feel like I’ve played a big part in them so being able to bring them onto the show is icing on the cake. It’s a shame that it’s under such circumstances, but we will give them the recognition they deserve.”

Ian McCoy, Area Stakeholder Manager at United Utilities said:

“United Utilities is pleased to once again sponsor the Cumbria Sports Awards. As a major employer in Cumbria we believe it’s really important to invest in local people. We look forward to celebrating the role that sport has played in supporting our communities through COVID-19.”
