Activate Programme Helps Older Adults in Barrow Get Moving and Connected

April 11, 2025

Erin Doherty, recently appointed Physical Activity Engagement Officer (Westmorland and Furness Council) and Project Officer (Active Cumbria), has been working in partnership with The Salvation Army in Barrow to deliver Activate sessions for older adults who regularly attend the local warm hub.

The Activate programme is designed to boost physical activity levels and social wellbeing among older adults by empowering community champions to lead fun, inclusive sessions. With tailored training and equipment provided, the programme aims to build confidence and sustainability within local communities.

Reflecting on the programme, Erin said:

“This was a great project to start my new role within Active Cumbria and Westmorland and Furness Council. It was so rewarding to see the improvements made weekly with the group - and the participants not even realising it! Every week and every new game were approached with enthusiasm and excitement, which really made this project such a pleasure to work on. I’m excited to look at starting this project with other organisations across Barrow.”

The sessions have had a noticeable impact—not just physically, but emotionally too. Participants reported improved confidence, mental wellbeing, and a stronger sense of community.

“My attitude to physical activity has changed. I always used to dismiss going when my friend invited me to chair exercise sessions. But after doing these sessions and seeing how able I am, I’m thinking about going—and I won’t be embarrassed. I’ve seen physical improvements each week and my confidence has grown. Erin made it easy to get involved. She treated us with respect and recognised that we still have our abilities.”

“The games made it fun—and you realise you’re being active without even thinking. The activities were always adapted so I could take part. I looked forward to the sessions every week. Erin’s calm and gentle approach made me feel able. It really boosted my mental health.”

“The activities were different to what we were used to, and I enjoyed them all. It was a joy to come every week. I especially liked the card pairing game—it was great for my memory and kept my brain active.”

“I don’t usually relax, but the 5 minutes at the end helped me feel calm. I loved being asked to think of something I was grateful for—it reminded me of all the good in my life. I’m really grateful for this group and how kind everyone is.”

Activate sessions are:

  • Free to attend and led by trained Activators
  • Suitable for beginners and those returning to activity
  • Hosted in accessible community venues
  • Often part of existing group meetings, with a strong social element
  • Tailored to suit the needs, pace, and abilities of each participant

The Salvation Army’s Activate project has been funded through the Live Longer Better in Cumbria Reconditioning Fund, which supports initiatives across the county that help older adults stay active, connected, and independent.
