Wigton Rugby Club

Project Title: Exercise Classes

Funding Received: £1821 (Phase 4: 1 April 22 - 31 March 23)

Project Outline:

As a result of working closely with the Health and Wellbeing Coaches at Keswick and Solway ICC, it was apparent that there was a need for more local physical activity provision within Wigton to meet the number of referrals that they are currently seeing. They have approached Wigton Rugby Club as a local community asset to see where they can support with specific groups; older adults, those with physical and learning disabilities and those with poor mental health.

This project has arisen from the long-term ramifications of Covid-19, with many patients/locals still hesitant to engage in local offers, with many set in a routine of staying in and doing very little to no exercise/physical activity at all. Specifically, for those with physical and learning disabilities there has been the barrier to reengaging and getting out in the community and this project will help bring people together again, ultimately to incorporate more movement into their routine but also for the mental and social benefits.

This project will initially offer classes to three specific audiences:

Older Adults – Pilates Fitness

The classes will be tailored to the needs of the people attending, with the focus being on strengthening the core and balance issues, incorporating breathing and gentle movement. This will support anybody returning to exercise or those with mobility issues / disabilities.

Mental Health – Body Conditioning

The classes will be based on a feel-good approach and enjoying exercise, with additional focus on the social side and trying to encourage engagement post session.

Physical/Learning Disabilities – Body Conditioning/Pilates

This session will be like the other sessions with the content but will have adaptations within the delivery to meet participants needs. The considerations will be for the sound and music choice (something more calming and quieter. There will be a slower delivery and prompt cards where verbal communication may not be suitable. There will also be an element of a sensory approach.

Overall, the benefits to each group are the increased movement and the social inclusion, which will impact on their overall fitness and the mental health fitness.
