Wild Work Day Supports Local Nature Reserve
May 27, 2026
The Active Cumbria team recently stepped away from their desks to support environmental sustainability efforts at Penrith’s Cold Springs Community Nature Reserve.
Hosted by Cumbria Wildlife Trust, the team took part in a wild work day, contributing to the ongoing development of the site, which is being transformed into a thriving space for biodiversity and community use.
The reserve has been created following a generous donation of three former agricultural fields to Cumbria Wildlife Trust. Since then, the Trust has led an ambitious programme of work to restore and enhance the land, creating habitats for wildlife while opening up access for local residents to enjoy green space.
As part of their commitment to championing environmental sustainability and under the guidance of site groundskeeper Amy, the team undertook several tasks including clearing and planting a butterfly and bug bank, constructing steps to improve access between pathways, and relocating compost across the site. The team also went on to complete the creation of a new pathway, further enhancing accessibility within the reserve.
The day formed part of Active Cumbria’s wider work to embed environmental sustainability across its operations and partnerships, while also providing an opportunity for team development outside of the usual working environment.
Reflecting on the day, the team highlighted the value of coming together in a different setting, strengthening relationships while contributing to a shared goal. The experience combined physical activity, collaboration, and a connection to nature - despite challenging weather conditions!
Active Cumbria will soon publish its Environmental Sustainability Plan, setting out how it will work with partners to ensure environmental considerations remain central to the future of sport and physical activity across the county.
Access to high-quality blue and green spaces, such as Cold Springs Nature Reserve, plays a vital role in supporting healthy, active communities. Through continued partnership with organisations including Cumbria Wildlife Trust, Active Cumbria is committed to supporting the protection and development of these important environments.
