Cumbria School Games Transition Festivals

February 13, 2025
Cumbria School Games were back this week, with Transition Festivals co-ordinated by Active Cumbria taking place at Whitehaven Sports Centre and Hoops Basketball Centre in Barrow-in-Furness.
Pupils in years 6 and 7 from schools across the county came together to enjoy a variety of games and team challenges including Boccia, Hockey, Tig, Football and Hoop. The Transition Festival supports Year 6 students transition to secondary school PE and Sport with confidence and provides opportunity for them to meet Year 7 students, make new friends, try new sports and build confidence.
The School Games, which is funded by Sport England National Lottery funding and delivered by the Youth Sport Trust, is a government led programme, inspiring young people to be physically active for life through positive experiences of daily activity and competition.
The aim of the School Games is to keep sport and physical activity at the heart of schools in Cumbria and provide young people with opportunities to achieve their personal best and together with School Games Organisers Active Cumbria co-ordinate festivals, events and competitions throughout the year. Specifically, the games aim to:
- Promote enjoyment, fair-play and positivity.
- Increase aspirations.
- Develop confidence, character and life skills.
- Foster individual, team and leadership competencies.
- Celebrate the diversity of Cumbria.
- Provide a wide range of opportunities based on the needs of young people.
- Include a strong cultural element to the Games.
The Transition Festivals were delivered by HP Activities.
A huge thank you to everyone involved, the teachers for taking the time to co-ordinate the school participation and of course all the children and young people for taking part.
