Brake's Road Safety Week 17-23 November 2024
November 14, 2024
Brake's Road Safety Week runs from 17 – 23 November 2024 and Active Travel to School officer Jodie, has put together some top tips to help you stay safe on the school run.
At drop-off and pick-up times, many school routes are clogged with traffic and poorly parked cars, creating dangerous levels of congestion and pollution.
This can make an unsafe environment for students wanting to walk or wheel to school.
Stop, look, and listen!
Although you can’t be responsible for the way people drive, you can take a few steps to make yourself safer as a pedestrian:
- Don’t try to cross the road between parked cars.
- If possible, cross at a pedestrian crossing or traffic lights.
- Never cross at a bend.
- If there is a footpath, use it.
- If there is no footpath, walk on the right-hand side of the road, facing oncoming traffic and keep as close as possible to the side of the road.
Be bright, be seen! Wear fluorescent clothing during the day and reflective clothing at night.
Safe cycling!
Cycling and scooting are great ways to travel to school, here are a few simple tips to make sure you stay safe on your journey.
- Remember to wear a helmet and some fluorescent clothing.
- If you’re cycling in the dark make sure you have a white light on the front, and a red light on the back of your bike.
- Watch out for things like leaves and puddles – they might be hiding potholes.
- Plan your route carefully; in frosty weather stick to gritted roads and give yourself extra time.
- In very icy weather, it might be safer to leave your bike at home.
Road Safety is Everyone’s Responsibility!
If you need to arrive at school by car, it’s important not to park on the yellow zigzags, and think of the safety of others, including those who are walking or wheeling to school.
Families can do their bit by remembering a few simple steps:
- Don’t block vehicle access points, including driveways.
- Don’t park opposite road junctions; you should be at least 10 metres away to so everyone has a good view of oncoming traffic.
- Keep clear of bus stops and bus bays.
- Park away from crossing points to give people a better view.
- Park away from school crossing patrols to allow children to cross the road safely.
