Cumbria 2012 Steering Group are urging schools in Cumbria to embrace the opportunities of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games by joining the official London 2012 Education programme 'Get Set'. By being a 'Get Set Network Member' schools and colleges will have the opportunity to access tickets for the games, Torch bearer slots and other exciting rewards.
Chair of Cumbria 2012 Steering Group and leader of South Lakeland District Council, Councillor Brendan Jameson said:
"The Get Set Network is an amazing opportunity for young people across Cumbria not only to see, but be part of this once-in-a-lifetime event.
I don't want any local schools or colleges to miss out on this fantastic opportunity, so I would urge any schools that have not already signed up and fully registered to do so now. Maybe you will be lucky enough to be at the London 2012 Games or carry the Olympic torch here in Cumbria with the eyes of the world upon you."
Cumbria currently has 172 schools registered which is only 49% of our schools. More importantly only 26 are on the 'Network' which is only 7.3% of our schools. It is by being on the 'Network' that schools will be able to access tickets and torchbearer places.
Schools in Cumbria which have already to benefited from being a Get Set Network member have been Mayfield Special School, who won visit from Mandeville the Paralympic Mascot last year, St Thomas CE Primary School and Lakes School were visited by Charles Allen, LOCOG board member in July who dropped in to see what the Young people where doing to celebrate the Olympic Values.
Lynne Brownrigg, Head Teacher at Mayfield School and Get Set Network member said:
"Students and staff from Mayfield were delighted to welcome Mandeville to our school. It was a wonderful opportunity and really brought the countdown to the 2012 Games to life. The students will always remember their special visitor. It would be great to think that all of the young people in our schools and colleges in Cumbria could access all of the opportunities that come with the London 2012 Games next year by being a 'Get Set Network Member'."
LOCOG has created a series of Get Set Network toolkits to help schools and colleges submit their applications, there are also a number of case studies to find out what other schools are up to in the run up to the games next year. http://getset.london2012.com/en/join-us/top-tips-for-joining
