Dance fever hits young Cumbrians

March 4, 2013

Hundreds of school children from across Cumbria are ready strut their stuff in a countywide dance festival later this month.

The U.Dance Cumbria Festival is an annual event organised by Active Cumbria (Cumbria County Council) and brings together pupils of all ages from primary, secondary and special schools in Allerdale, Carlisle, Copeland, Barrow and Eden to perform and celebrate their achievements in dance.

The festival gets underway on Wednesday 13th March when pupils from Barrow schools hit the boards at the forum in Barrow.  School performing here include Roose Community, Sacred Heart,Cambridge, Waberthwaite & Yarlside primary school, and also Barrow’s youth dance company DARE2.

At Carlisle’s Sands Centre on Thursday 14th March and Friday 15th March pupils from thirty six schools will be tripping the light fantastic including James Rennie, Rosley, William Howard, Shap, Gilsland,Samuel Kings & Victoria Junior School.

In addition The Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal will be hosting its annual schools dance platform in association with U.Dance from Monday 18th March to Friday 22nd March for pupils in South Lakeland.

The Festival places dance artists in schools so that they can share their skills with classroom teachers and improve the teaching of dance in schools. All pupils taking part have worked extremely hard with their teachers to choreograph the performances, many of them linked to topics they are learning about in other areas of the curriculum.

Lynn Barnes, the county’s Dance Cumbria Co-ordinator said: “The festival is a great opportunity for schools and youth dance groups in Cumbria to celebrate what they are achieving in dance. Cumbria is really buzzing with youth dance activity at the moment.  We’ve recently taken 4 groups to The Lowry in Manchester to perform as part of the U.Dance North West Festival.”

Tickets for all U.Dance performances are available from the respective venue box offices.
