Cumbria School Games want young people to design their district flags!

March 20, 2012

The Local Organising Committee of the Cumbria School Games is running a 'Design Your Flag' competition and wants young people and schools all over Cumbria to get involved and submit designs.

David Keetley Chair of the Local Organising Committee said:

"We're looking for designs inspired by the Olympic and Paralympic Games that will then go on to be made into full size flags and play an exciting role in the opening ceremony of the Cumbria School Games event on the 27th June in Carlisle. We're well aware that there is a lot already going on in schools linking to the London Games and the Torch relay. We want to capture some of this wonderful creative artwork and create a lasting legacy from the first 2012 School games event and use the flags for future years."

The flags should embrace the Olympic and Paralympic Values which are:

Olympic Values
Respect
Excellence
Friendship

Paralympic Values
Courage
Determination
Inspiration
Equality

Young people can watch a video about the Olympic and Paralympic Values here

What matters the most is that the design has been created by young people aged up 19 yrs and linked to your local area!  All designs will be judged on their composition, originality and the connections you have made to your local area and the Olympic and Paralympic values.

Young people are advised to refrain from using the Olympic Rings, the number '2012' and the reference to wording 'London 2012' in their designs.

One winner from each district will be chosen by a judging panel including the School Games Local Organising Committee members. Two copies of each flag will be produced one for your school to keep and the other to be carried by young people representing their district at our School Games Festival Event on the 27th June 2012. The flags will be produced by the Amazing Arts Group, a group of young people aged 18-25 year olds who are supported by community arts company New Arts North.
Celia Burbush of New Arts North said:

"It is great news that we can be involved in the Cumbria School Games and our Amazing Arts group are ready to expect some great designs. The group can adapt designs to various mediums and have made flags, t-shirts and much more for a number of local events."

The winning flags will be presented as part of a Flag Relay accompanied by Olympic Mascot Wenlock on 21st and 22nd May 2012. As well as the over all winners, the judging panel will be awarding 'highly commended' to the most eye catching designs from different age groups. These designs will then go on to be used on various things from the event programmes to webpage's.

Entrants must be under 19 yrs  - Design's must fill an A4 landscape sheet of paper. Please send your design along with a completed application form to:
