Nominations are open for Cumbria Sports Awards

September 30, 2021

It's the time to celebrate Cumbria's Sporting Achievments

The Cumbria Sports Awards nomination window opens on Friday 1st October 2021.

The awards, organised by Active Cumbria, recognises the outstanding talents, commitment and successes of teams and individuals throughout Cumbria who are involved in sport. The awards also highlight the dedication and commitment of the vast number of volunteers, coaches, and others behind the scenes who make sport happen across the county.

Winners of the 13 award categories will be announced live on BBC Radio Cumbria across the week of 22 November.

The awards, which last year focused on those from the world of sport that were making a difference in their community’s Covid-19 efforts, have now reverted back to focusing on sporting achievements and volunteering, however, if a nomination has been supporting their community through Covid-19, this will still be considered by the Judging Panel.

Richard Johnston, Senior Manager (Operations) at Active Cumbria said:

“We are really grateful that BBC Radio Cumbria are supporting us again this year and feel that being live on their Breakfast Show is a great alternative to a formal presentation under the current circumstances.

“I’m looking forward to receiving huge numbers of high-quality nominations from across the county, we have so much talent, commitment and achievement going on in our clubs, schools, and our communities that I’m sure the standard of nominations will be at its usual high standard.

It’s great that we are back celebrating everything that is great about sport and physical activity in Cumbria, and I’m looking forward to the winner’s announcements on BBC Radio Cumbria.

We have also taken the opportunity to dedicate one of the award categories to our friend and former colleague Becky Underwood, who sadly passed away as a result of Covid-19 earlier in 2021. Becky was passionate about all aspects of volunteering, so it is a fitting tribute to her that the volunteer award category will be named in her memory moving forward.”

Awards organisers Active Cumbria are asking Cumbrian clubs, governing bodies, sports fans, parents, coaches or teachers to submit their nominations.

But it is not only the headline-grabbing professional stars they are looking to honour. In total, 13 categories recognise various levels of sporting success, in addition to the support services of volunteering, administration, and coaching.

It could be your child's teacher who coaches after school and works tirelessly to train a team for the next sports championships. Or it could be a coach at your local sports club who has spent hours doing voluntary coaching, and you feel it is time they got the recognition they deserve.
