First cohort of Travel Actively cycle leaders pass with flying colours

October 20, 2023

Barrow’s Travel Actively pilot saw its first cohort pass their Cycling Group Leader Award, thanks to tutor Helen, delivering a brilliant course on behalf of Cycling UK.

Seven people are now qualified to lead group rides in Barrow, all participating from a range of organisations, such as Age UK, Barrow Forward, Westmorland and Furness as well as Siona and Chris, our Travel Actively Development Officers for Barrow and Carlisle taking part.

All participants had completed e-learning prior to the day, and during the course they learned: how to assess participants and boost their confidence; explored and tried different approaches to ride leading; the fundamentals of route planning; understood ways to assess and manage risk, and how to deal with incidents and ultimately, to have experience of managing a group of inexperienced riders through traffic.

Barrow’s Travel Actively team have arranged a second Cycling UK Group Leade Course, to take place on Friday 10th November. There are limited places remaining and anyone interested in taking part in this or future courses, is invited to express an interest via our Get Involved page.

Courses are funded, so free to attend, although you need to be a certain level of competence in order to access the course – see Cycling UK website for full details: Group leader | Cycling UK.

You will receive expert tuition from Cycling UK tutors, and ongoing support and guidance, via the Travel Actively Team.

Our objective is to build a workforce of cycle leaders, who can then go on to support people within their organisations to develop their confidence and skills with cycling. This is part of our ongoing commitment to enable people to travel more actively for shorter journeys, via walking, wheeling and cycling.
