Praise from Minister of State for Children and Families for Active Cumbria Team

July 30, 2015

Active Cumbria Team has recently received a letter from Edward Timpson, Minister of State for Children and Families praising the pioneering work that they have undertaken across the county to support 100 schools to effectively measure the impact of the Primary PE and Sport Premium.

This is the second time that the Minister has recognised the work of Active Cumbria.  Back in March, the Minister speaking at the opening address of the 2015 County Sports Partnership’s Convention in Nottingham gave specific praise of the excellent work that the ‘Impact Factor Project’ was achieving by providing subject leaders with help and support for them to devise realistic lesson plans, evaluate what external providers have contributed, and crucially, to put the child back at the centre of PE lessons.

In July, Active Cumbria published the ‘Impact Factor Project’ good guidance report showing the difference the Primary PE and Sports Premium funding has made to pupils’ achievement and social and personal development in a small sample of the 100 primary schools in Cumbria that have engaged in the wider project to date.

The project, required schools to move beyond listing activities that any additional funding provided, to gathering  evidence to show how the funding  promoted gains in pupils’ achievement and well-being.

It is the approaches used to gathering and recording evidence of achievement that makes this Cumbria based project both unique and innovative.  The case studies in the report from eleven schools provide additional and essential information necessary when making a value for money judgement.  The successful processes used in pre-planning and gathering evidence in this project,  pre-empts almost all of the recommendations to schools in the good practice report published by Ofsted in October 2014.

The Active Cumbria Team are confident that schools making effective use of the resources provided at the Impact Factor workshops comfortably meet the criteria used by Ofsted to define outstanding practice.
