A new project has launched to encourage more people in Cumbria to become more active.
The project, Go Active in Cumbria, will focus on getting people active through walking, running, cycling, swimming and other outdoor and indoor activities around the county.
As well as encouraging people in our towns and communities to make more use of running, cycling and walking routes, the project also aims to inspire more people to get out into Cumbria's great outdoors and have fun exercising in a world-class environment, which attracts millions of visitors a year.
Whether people want to exercise on their own, or with a group of friends, family, or work colleagues, or whether they want to join a local club, Go Active will provide all the advice they need to get started and enjoy being active, with all the physical, mental and self-esteem benefits it brings.
Initial partners in Go Active are ourselve - Active Cumbria, the County Sports Partnership/Cumbria County Council, GSK and CN Media Group.
Other organisations are set to join the initiative which adopts a county-wide #teamcumbria approach to activity by creating a positive and supportive community encouraging people to take their first steps to a more active and healthy life.
Councillor Ian Stewart, Cumbria County Council Portfolio Holder for Public Health and Community Services said
“Cumbria is a place where everyone is able to enjoy an active, healthy and fulfilling life. This campaign is an innovative approach to encourage just this. We all know that Cumbria is a great place to live and work, however there are many people who could be more active. This campaign will highlight how people can get outside and get active, and in doing so enjoy the benefits that physical activity brings to health and wellbeing”
Councillor Clare Feeney-Johnson, Cumbria County Council cabinet member for schools and learning said “It’s a really positive opportunity to partner with Local Media and have a cross County approach to encouraging individuals and families who are currently inactive, to become more active.”
Jonathan Lee, Group Development Director at CN Media Group said: “We've been so encouraged to see so many more people in our communities running, cycling and swimming in recent years and have been delighted to play our part through organising events ranging from the Walney Family Fun Run to Workington's Festival of Running, right up to the Ullswater Triathlon and The Lakesman challenge.
"Now we want to help those people who want to exercise more, but don't know how to get started, to find an activity that they find fun and to inspire them to do more as they build up their confidence.
"Go Active aims to break down all those barriers that people might have to getting more active - whether it's people not feeling they have time due to busy lives, or not having the self-esteem to head out of the front door and give it a go.
"We aim to help people in an encouraging, supportive and informative way, so they can find their own route to a more fun, active life with all the mental, physical and social benefits that can bring.
"We don't want people who are not active to be put off by thinking they have to sign up to a massive fitness challenge. It's not about starting out aiming to complete a marathon or a triathlon.
"For the majority of people it might well be deciding to walk or cycle to work, or to have a short run in the evening or at the weekend, or to finally go for that swim in the local pool, anything that you've been putting off doing for one reason or another.
"All journeys start somewhere. And even those who take a few short steps towards a more active life are doing more than if they had stayed sitting on the sofa and deserve their own pat on the back and round of applause. We will encourage and help anyone who wants to take those first steps.
"With the Olympic Games starting on Friday, bringing back memories of London 2012, we hope people of all ages, from nine to 90, from families to work colleagues, will be inspired to join in, give it a go, and Go Active."
Wayne Singleton, Project Manager, said: "This is a really exciting project to be involved in, promoting activity across our amazing county. We've got millions of people visiting to take advantage of our outdoors each year, but nearly 70% of our residents don't do a great deal. We want to help people get out and do more, however they want to do it!
"We've got an e-newsletter campaign to help you get more active over an eight-week programme, which you can sign up to through our website, and we've lined up some amazing inspiring stories to share of people just like you who have benefited from becoming more active."
