Get your running shoes on for a starlit express

October 19, 2015

Runners across England, whether beginners or athletes, are donning head torches to keep up their fitness through the short winter days.

Night Run is a UK-wide series of trail running events held at National Trust sites, bringing people into its parkland after-hours to run and explore the landscape.

Families, novice runners and outdoor enthusiasts are invited to Fell Foot’s first Night Run, on Saturday, 7 November.

Runners at Fell Foot will have two routes to choose from: the 3km Explorer route, or for a longer challenge, the Adventurer is a 7km route.

The undulating Explorer route along the shoreline of Windermere is ideal for walkers and younger family members as they complete a lap of the park.

The Adventure course goes across the southern meadow and, under starry skies on a clear night, it’s a chance to see Fell Foot in a different light.

Entry tickets include on-site catering, well-marked reflective course signage, event marshals, timing and results service.

Gareth Field, the National Trust’s Sports Development Officer in the Lake District, says:

“Since the National Trust began organising Night Run events, we’ve had an amazing response and we thought it was time the Lake District had one of its own. They’re open to anyone, regardless of fitness level – it’s just a great way of getting out in the fresh air. “

There are regular running opportunities at Fell Foot, with a free 5km Parkrun every Saturday morning, with a social chat in the café afterwards.

Gareth added:

“Experiencing places in the dark can put such a different perspective on the look and feel of them. Fell Foot is glorious during the day, but beautiful and atmospheric at night, something not to be missed. The fact there is a BBQ at the end will make it even better.”

Night Run starts at 5.30pm, with registration from 4.15pm. A head torch for running is ideal, though a hand-held torch can be used. The course is over good tracks and trails, but suitable running or walking footwear is strongly recommended.
