Cumbria badminton star Lauren Smith will be out to successfully retain her coveted national title later this month when she competes at the English National Badminton Championships at K2 Crawley.
The 23 year old from Longtown, who won Commonwealth silver and bronze for England at Glasgow 2014, has been women’s doubles national champion for the past two years, alongside world number six, Gabby Adcock.# Now Smith will head to Sussex looking for a back-to-back hat trick of national titles when the Championships take place between 30 January and 1 February.
Smith will be amongst the favourites to retain her title despite a change in doubles pairing which sees her partner England team mate Heather Olver, herself a 6-time national finalist and former champion.
The two-time Cumbria Sports Personality of the Year, Smith is one of over 200 of England’s best badminton players in the hunt for national glory at the 2015 English National Badminton Championships.
The list of players set to compete at K2 Crawley also includes reigning Commonwealth Games champions Chris and Gabby Adcock, seven-time national champion Rajiv Ouseph and former World Champion and Olympic silver medallist Gail Emms MBE.
Adrian Christy, Chief Executive of event organisers Badminton England, said “The English National Badminton Championships are all about celebrating everything that is great about English badminton.
“They offer a great value way for families to see Glasgow 2014 stars live in action and experience live top class badminton in a venue that puts you in the heart of the action.”
Tickets start from just £2 for children and £8 for adults and are available online at www.badmintonengland.co.uk/nationals
