The Cumbria Leadership and Volunteering Group was tasked with creating "a consistent leadership and volunteering pathway for children and young people across Cumbria, supported by appropriate training". The idea of the Pathway was to bring together all relevant information from the various different colleagues and networks that offered leadership and volunteering opportunities in sport to young people.
Initially the group saw the pathway as being a brochure, but after the information was gathered Helen Wright from the Furness School Sport Partnership offered to take the project to her Leadership Academy for them to give their view as young volunteers. It was the Leadership Academy's input that led to the pathway becoming a website they also gave the group the motivation to complete the work. Sarah Wiejak, Danielle Fowler and Katie Grove from the Furness Leadership Academy came along to the Cumbria 2012 Conference to accept the award.
The Volunteer and Leadership Pathways website is now an invaluable resource for young people and all those involved in guiding them through their sporting activities. It is designed to adapt and increase as new opportunities arise, it links through to other websites holding information about how to get involved and provides plenty of ideas for inspiration to motivate young people.
The pathways website was successful in obtaining the 2012 Inspiremark during 2010. This is due to it's ability to inspire and motivate young people to get involved in Leadership and Volunteering in the run up to the London 2012 Games and the originality of the project.
