Dance Cumbria was a major countywide dance development project lasting ten years from 2004 to 2015, investing £650k from Arts Council North West (G4A) and many other local and regional investors into the local economy.
The project’s key aims were to (1) increase participation (2) develop the local workforce and (3) nurture & celebrate excellence.
It focused on participatory activity, primarily for children and young people, through regular weekly classes, an annual U.DanceCumbriafestival, boys-only projects, CanDance (an award-winning programme for young people with a learning disability), Cumbria Youth Dance Company, performances opportunities and professional development for local practitioners & teachers.
Dance Cumbria reached over 58,000 people and created life-changing opportunities for many children, young people and adults.
Dance Cumbria’s legacy is a much stronger infrastructure of high quality dance practitioners and sustainable community-based participatory opportunities.
