Rowing is known for legendary displays of strength and stamina.
The first Rowing races took place on the River Thames in Shakespeare's time, when Londoners bet on the ferries crossing between the banks.
The sport developed its modern form during the 19th century, after universities adopted it as a competitive event. So began a tradition that remains to this day with the annual Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge university students.

Explore Rowing - Ten thousand adults will have the chance to try rowing or get back onto the water thanks to a new Sport England funded programme launched by Sir Steve Redgrave this week. The Explore Rowing programme, run by British Rowing, will make it easier for non-competitive rowers to enjoy the sport.
USEFUL WEBSITES

British Rowing is the governing body for the sport of rowing (both indoor rowing and rowing on water). It is responsible for the training and selection of individual rowers and crews representing Great Britain and for participation in and development of rowing and indoor rowing in England.

Explore Rowing flexible, fun, and more varied rowing programmes for adult rowers is the vision behind 'Explore Rowing'. This new initiative is part of Rowing's Strategic Plan 2009-13 and is about enabling our clubs to attract more rowers and helping them with the support and resources they need to keep both new and existing rowers in the sport.
