The Cumbria Talented Athlete Fund has been created as part of the sporting legacy of London 2012 to support Cumbria's most talented athletes. The fund is being supported by Cumbria County Council, South Lakeland District Council and Allerdale Borough Council and is being administered by the Cumbria Sport Partnership.
The Fund has been developed to assist those performers who are or who have the potential to achieve national and international recognition in their chosen sport. As such, the Fund has been divided into two streams; the Performance Fund is for athletes already competing at national or international level, and the Potential Fund is for those young athletes aspiring to perform at national and international level.
The fund was launched in January 2010 and there have been hundreds of applications made from talented sports performers from all over Cumbria. The first round of grants from the Performance Fund have been announced today, with the first cheque being presented to Charlotte Watson on 30 March 2010.
Eddie Edge, Director at Cumbria Sport Partnership said, "I'm delighted to be able to announce the first recipients of funding from the Performance Fund. The quality of the applications we received was extremely high; however, the five award winners this year are performing on the international stage and will be looking to develop further over the coming year. Can I offer my congratulations to each of them".
Brendan Jameson, Leader of South Lakeland District Council and Chair of the Cumbria 2012 Group added, "This is a real step forward for the talented sports performers of Cumbria, I'm sure the Fund will benefit those elite performers already operating at the highest levels, and also provide some much needed finance to those aspiring Cumbrian performers looking to get to the next level. I would like to personally congratulate the first award recipients, who are all doing excellent work representing Cumbria on the international stage".
Sam Standage, Portfolio Holder for Leisure Services from Fund supporter Allerdale Borough Council added, "I am delighted that Allerdale Borough Council has been able to support the creation of this fund, which will benefit talented sports performers from across Cumbria. I'm particularly delighted that two award recipients in the first round of grant awards are from the Allerdale area, it does highlight the sporting talents we have in the Borough".
