Allerdale Leadership Academy 2010 to stage multi-school Sports Festival
8th February 2010
This year’s Allerdale Leadership Academy sees young people from schools throughout Allerdale volunteering to stage and manage a year 8 and 9 multi-school sports festival this summer. The aim of the sports festival, which will be held on July 2nd at Netherhall School, Maryport, is to attract children from all over the region to get involved in sport of all kinds, no matter what their ability. The whole event will be planned, organised and hosted by students taking part in the Allerdale Leadership Academy. The Academy is designed to support young people committed to volunteering within their school or community. In the lead up to July 2nd, the students will attend workshops on such themes as Event Management, First Aid, Media/Marketing and Coaching/Officiating. A total of nine secondary schools will be taking part and the sports festival should attract over 300 pupils. It has also been timed to coincide with National School Sports Week (28 June – 2 July).
In addition to this, Cumbria Sports Partnership is staging a multi-school sports event for all schools in Cumbria, bringing together all six of the county’s school partnerships. The event has yet to be named and will be held in Penrith on July 1st (at the Leisure Centre, Ullswater Community College and the Rugby Club). A small group of the Allerdale Leadership Academy students will also help to organise this event. Those attending the Allerdale Leadership Academy launch day, held at Stainburn School, Workington last Thursday were asked to name the event for the chance to win an Ipod Nano – watch this space!
With the 2012 Olympics just around the corner, the emphasis is on making sports exciting and accessible to everyone.
