2010 Carnegie Schools Girls Festivals

Year 8 Whitehaven Girls

The 2010 Carnegie Schools Girls Festivals for Year 7, Year 8, Year 9 and Year 10 was attended by St Benedicts, Whitehaven, Millom and Netherall.  A total of 150+ girls participated in this years' festivals.

  • Year 7 was played on April 21st featuring St Benedicts, Whitehaven, Millom and Netherall.
  • Year 8 was played on April 14th featuring Whitehaven, Millom and Netherall
  • Year 9 was played on April 21st featuring St Benedicts, Whitehaven and Netherall
  • Year 10 was played on April 14th featuring St Benedicts, Whitehaven, Millom and Netherall

Each competition operated with each team playing each other once and the results recorded for a league table and the table toppers of each competition to be the eventual winners then progress to the national stages off the competition.
Both days where bathed in spring sunshine and standard of play on show was just as bright.  Over the festivals a total of 14 games games played with great intensity and a huge amount of local pride, not to mention some dazzling skills and inventive play from all teams.  The day had its' stand out performers as does any and an enjoyable time seem to be had by all.


Each event was supported by volunteers trained through the Rugby League Organisers Award scheme and saw a total of 12 volunteers supporting the events in administration, officiating and management capacities.

The Winners

  • Winners for Y7 were : Netherhall School - Player of the Tournament was Anastacia Towers (St Benedicts)
  • Winners for Y8 were : Whitehaven School - Player of the Tournament was Chloe Addison (Whitehaven)
  • Winners for Y9 were : St Benedicts School - Player of the Tournament was Danielle Nicholson (Netherhall)
  • Winners for Y10 were : Whitehaven School - Player of the Tournament was Amy-Leigh Smith (Whitehaven)

Each of the winners progress to the National Stages of the Carnegie Champions Schools and has the chance to play in the National Finals in London on the weekend of the Carnegie Challenge Cup Final.

Whitehaven Teacher, Tracey Clooney said "It is a great opportunity for the girls to showcase their talents on the national stages and to get some recognition for all the hard work and effort they put in."

Cumbria Rugby League Development Officer, Anthony Atherton sais "Having only been working in the county for 6 months the dedictation and ability of the girls is right up there.  I really hope we can go on to get one or two representative through to the national stages and we'll be supporting the girls all the way with any coaching they may need."
