There are now nearly 1000 Judo clubs registered in the UK.

Judo is now the most popular martial art in the world, with 13 million participants in 111 countries. Judo has its roots in ju-jitsu which goes back many centuries in Japanese history when it was a brutal and often lethal method of self-defence and unarmed combat.

New Adults Beginners initiative coming to Cumbria

In January 2012 the British Judo Associations nine English Areas are piloting an Adult Beginners Course programme, if successful this may be rolled out Nationally more.


The courses are ten weeks in duration and the cost £60.00 includes not only the cost of the course but BJA Membership (which affords insurance cover among its many other benefits), a Gi (Judo kit) and the players first grading fee at the conclusion of the course. Only select Clubs have been identified at this stage and in Cumbria the prestigious Kendal Judo Club was chosen, details of the course are as follows:


Kendal Judo Club

Start date: Tuesday 31st January

Time: 7:30pm - 9:00pm

Venue: Kendal JC, The Dojo, Parkside Road, LA9 7EN.


Registration must be done on line in advance to ensure the BJA Membership and Gi can be processed, register here
