Stanwix School for Team Carlisle were crowned Cumbria Sainsbury’s School Games Sportshall winners today after a tough competition right to the very end of the event against Team Furness. Everyone at the event was on tenterhooks as both Furness and Carlisle were neck and neck on points as they went into the final relay of the competition.
150 young people arrived at Penrith today to represent their districts and ready to compete for their schools in the Sportshall Athletics competition. The school teams were chosen to represent their districts after having qualified through intra and inter school competitions organised by the district School Games Organisers.
Claire Bushell of Sportshall Associates said:
“It was great to see so many young people here today. The standard of competition by all of the district teams was really excellent. We hope everyone enjoyed themselves and look forward to next year.”
Schools finished in the following positions:
1 Stanwix, Carlisle
2 Askham Village, Furness
3 Seaton, Allerdale
4 Scotby CofE, Carlisle
5 St James, Copeland
6 South Walney, Furness
7 Beaconside, Eden
8 Dearham, Allerdale
9 North Lakes, Eden
10 St Thomas, South Lakeland
11 Valley, Copeland
The points from the two spring events will be accumulated and added to the results from the upcoming two Summer events to determine which district will be crowned the overall Cumbria School Games winners. The summer events take place at the end of June and beginning of July with Year 7 Athletics finals at the Copeland Athletics stadium on 25 June, and a Multi sport festival being held in Carlisle with nine different sports competitions taking over various sports sites in the city on 4July.
The Cumbria School Games is much more than a sports competition programme. There are other opportunities for young people to get involved with the event by becoming a Young Reporter, designing the official Cumbria School Games Graffiti tag or by designing the county’s School games Mascot. The mascot is currently open for entries until Friday 25th April.
