Sportivate Success for Cumbria!

August 1, 2014

Active Cumbria has received some fantastic news regarding the delivery of one of its key Sport England funded programmes. Sportivate a £56 million National Lottery funded participation initiative that gives 11 to 25-year-olds who aren’t particularly sporty six to eight weeks’ free coaching in sport/physical activity with access to future participation through the coaching provider.

Active Cumbria have been rated by Sport England as the top performing county sports partnership in England with an over-achievement of their 2013-14 annual target by a whopping 272%. That equates to a total of 2446 taking part in the Sportivate programme!

One of the many successful Sportivate projects in Cumbria was ‘Swimming sessions which supported students from Lake College studying the uniformed services course’.

The sessions helped students trying improve their swimming for the swim fitness tests they had coming up in the military.  Many of the students could not swim more than a few metres at the start of the sessions and one student in particular had great fear of water but progressed steadily to overcome this and has now become a competent swimmer.

Shona Palmer was one of the students who attended the Sportivate swimming sessions to improve her Swim fitness. Following on from completing the sessions, Shona went on to become a qualified lifeguard and now works at Egremont Pool.  She has also completed her swimming teacher qualification and is thoroughly enjoying working at the pool-side.

‘I have had great success from the swimming lessons and have achieved more than I ever thought I could of done through just swimming! I have always had an interest in sport and this was the perfect opportunity to start the early steps of my career in sport.’     ‘I found the sessions fun, interesting and knowing that I could go onto train for my lifeguard qualification made me challenge myself, it also helped me prove to myself that I can achieve anything through sheer hard work and determination.  I’m so please that these sessions took place and that I had the opportunity to be part of them, thank you’ - Shona Palmer

Active Cumbria will be supporting 77 Sportivate projects in in 2014-2015 working with 27 different providers to deliver a wide range of sports including Archery, Dance, Climbing and Gymnastics and many more traditional sports such as Hockey and Football, with 20 of the projects will have a disability focus.
