Penrith Golf Club are currently working with Eden MENCAP Society to provide an opportunity for 8 adults with learning disabilities to play golf at the club. Under the supervision of Andrew Sowerby, Club Professional and Club PGA Level 1 coaches they are attending weekly for a six week period.
Originally some attended just to watch but liked what they saw and joined in to hit golf balls themselves at the excellent practice facilities at the club.
The sessions will run through October and it is hoped that work of this nature can be continued by the club in 2016. The Club has recently been awarded the prestigious Golf Mark accolade which encourages participating clubs to provide golf opportunities to all.
Jacqui Taylor, Chief Officer of Eden MENCAP commented
‘I am so pleased that we have been able to work with Penrith Golf Club to provide an opportunity for several of our keen, eager and interested adult activity participants to try golf. This enhances their daily activities and community participation.Playing golf is a healthy sport which enriches their interests, promotes discussion and encourages integration. My grateful thanks go to all the staff at Penrith Golf Club for making this happen’.
The Club Captain Duncan Miller added
'This is a marvellous initiative by the Club and my thanks go to our Professional Andrew Sowerby for his coaching skills and to Past Captain Phil Park for linking with the Society and driving this activity forward’.
