Cumbria RFU MLD/SLD Schools Tournament Open for Entries

1st February 2012

The annual event is one of a number of Disability Sport Events organised throughout the county.  The Tournament aimed at young people with Moderate and Severe Learning Difficulties in Key Stages 3 and 4 provides a fun and competitive environment with the opportunity for winning school teams to represent Cumbria in the annual North West Wooden Spoon MLD/SLD Tag Rugby Tournament in Blackburn.

"This is the fourth year we've been running the tournament and the popularity grows each year," commented RFU Development Officer Gary Holmes: "The growth in numbers reflects the work our Community Rugby Coaching team who provide coaching to mainstream and special schools in Cumbria helping them prepare for the event. The young people really love the event and it gives them another opportunity to get involved in sport with other young people with similar abilities."

The tournament was attended by over 50 young people last year which was hugely successful with Stainburn School and Cockermouth School from Allerdale representing Cumbria at the North West Wooden Spoon Tournament in Blackburn.

This years Cumbria Rugby Football Unions Annual MLD / SLD  Tag Rugby Festival is taking place on Tuesday 13th March 2012 at Netherhall Sports Centre in Maryport. Entry Forms should be completed and returned no later than 1st March 2012.

The RFU are keen to get to involve as many schools as possible in this year's event. The event Manager Gary Holmes says 'It doesn't matter if schools have no or little experience of playing tag rugby. Our coaching staff can offer coaching to teach young people the game and support schools to engage schools within the event.'

If any schools would like any coaching support prior to the event please contact Gary Holmes who will get your local Community Rugby Coach to contact you.  Contact Gary Holmes on 07545921474 or email garryholmes@therfu.com
