A Cumbria club is looking to the future with its plans to encourage more people into golf after receiving national recognition for its child and beginner-friendly approach.
Carlisle Golf Club has been awarded GolfMark, a national seal of approval for junior and beginner-friendly facilities which play an important role in the development of the game.
GolfMark is a national scheme that incorporates ClubMark and recognises initiatives that focus on Coaching and Playing, Club Environment and Child Protection, and Duty of Care, all of which are extremely important to parents and children alike.
The club and its PGA professional Graeme Lisle offer a wide range of routes into golf for people of all ages and abilities.
Club officials say the award of GolfMark has inspired them to raise their standards even higher.
Lady Captain Jacqui Raw says: “The GolfMark procedure made us look at how we operate with juniors and we realised that at club level we were not as good as we thought we were. Now we have the right steps and support in place through our development plan. “Junior golf activities are led by our PGA professional Graeme Lisle and supported by the Junior organisers and club volunteers to ensure golf is fun and carried out in a safe and secure environment.”
Club professional Graeme Lisle says: “I am pleased the club is being recognised for the hard work that it does for beginner golf. We take people from grassroots all the way through and our junior academy has been very successful and is going from strength to strength. “We run junior beginner classes on a Tuesday evening while we now have more than 50 junior members and are this year’s winners of the Northern Cumbrian League.”
The club, which was founded in 1908, has staged regional qualifying for The Open on six occasions since 1996 and the par 71 parkland course hosted the English Seniors Championship in 2010.
Carlisle hosts regular taster sessions for both adults and juniors as well as a successful Ladies Introductory Package and has also launched a 2014 Academy Package. Junior coaching sessions are held for beginners as well as for improving golfers.
Further details of all coaching packages are available from Graeme Lisle on 01228 513241 or by visiting the club website Says Nicola Martindale, county development officer for the Cumbria County Golf Partnership: “Carlisle is a club that understands the importance of attracting new players – and potential members – into golf and offers a wide range of routes into the sport that can help those who may never have played before or those who want to improve their skills.
“GolfMark means a parent dropping off their child knows they are in a positive environment with the emphasis on the right care and responsibilities while the array of coaching sessions they offer means people of all ages can give the sport a go and enjoy the health and social benefits that come with it.”
