Can You Make a Difference to the Future of English Football?

April 11, 2013

The heavily acclaimed FA Tesco Skills Programme is currently being expanded and will, for the first time, include a team within Cumberland.

The Football Association introduced The FA Tesco Skills Programme with the aim to provide all 5-11’s with a skill set to develop their game, foster lifelong healthy active lifestyles and to improve the long-term performance of our National Game.

The Programme gives 5-11’s year old players age appropriate coaching and self-help tools to learn the basics needed to reach their full potential and has, to date, provided 4 million places on coaching courses.

By working with Tesco and supported by Sport England, The FA aims to sustain and grow the current Programme, to provide 4.7 million places by 2014 and as part of this expansion has provided funding for 2 coaches within Cumberland.

Chief Executive of Cumberland FA, Ben Snowdon, said “We are delighted that The FA Tesco Skills Programme is coming to Cumberland as we firmly believe that this Programme will have a massive impact upon children’s football within the County.  We have always felt that having FA Tesco Skills coaches would be the final piece of the jigsaw that is football development.

The Skills Teams will be going into strategically selected Schools and Charter Standard Clubs and providing them with free, child centered and age appropriate coaching which places fun and learning at the heart of its philosophy.   The fact that the youngsters will be enjoying themselves and developing as players will undoubtedly encourage more children to take up and remain within the game.

This announcement, alongside the proposed changes to children’s football through the FA Youth Review, leaves me really excited as to both the short and longer term future of grassroots football within Cumberland.”

As well as providing coaching in schools and clubs the FA Tesco Skills Coaches will also offer targeted support to players through Skills and Player Development Centres.

The FA wants to hear from people who are passionate about football and coaching 5-11 year olds and who meet the minimum criteria, which can be found at:
