Emma Martin, Marketing & Communications Officer and Richard Johnston, Partnership Manager pick up the commendation on behalf of Active Cumbria.
18th July 2011
Active Cumbria went up against some of the biggest names in sport for a chance to win the 'Best Sports Marketing & Communications Campaign' at the inaugural MBNA Northern Sports Awards. Lancashire Cricket Club took the trophy home with them but not before Active Cumbria, alongside Manchester City Football Club picked up 'Highly Commended' in the largest category of the night.
The event, was held at The Point, Lancashire County Cricket Club, and brought together a glittering collection of organisations from professional sport and providers of sport to celebrate the huge contribution sport, in all its guises, makes to life across northern England.
Active Cumbria was nominated in the 'Best Sports Marketing and Communications Campaign' category for the work they led around encouraging the people of Cumbria to become more active and to exercise for 3 x 30 minutes each week. The campaign proved to be such a success that in 2010 Cumbria was named the third most active County in England.
Emma Martin, Marketing and Communications Officer at Active Cumbria said:
"The competition was of an incredibly high standard. To pick up 'Highly Commended' recognition alongside Man City was a great honour for Active Cumbria. Beating the likes of Manchester United Football Foundation just shows the strength of what partnership working can achieve."
Active Cumbria worked closely with Cumbria County Council, the six Local Authorities, Cumbria NHS, and many other providers of sport and physical activity across the county including local sports clubs and coaches on the campaign. The results, which were measured by the national Active People survey, revealed that in Cumbria 25.5% of the adult population were taking part in 3 thirty minute sessions of sport or physical activity each week; this was set against a target of 24.9%.
The results play an even more important role for Cumbria as they were used as the basis for a stretch target within Cumbria's Local Area Agreement, the achievement of which resulted in Cumbria receiving a reward grant of £692,000.
