Jacques O'Neill - Cumbria Talented Athlete Fund Recipient

The Askam teenager has penned a 27-month contract with Castleford Tigers RLFC, a deal which has seen him move to West Yorkshire.

The 16-year-old former Dowdales School pupil will play his games for the club’s under-19s side, and will be involved with the Super League set-up under coach Daryl Powell. This makes him the youngest furness rugby player to sign a full-time professional contract.

O’Neill learnt the game through the youth set-up at Askam and was also part of the Cumbria Academy before being snapped up by Castleford. The talented hooker was also part of the Cumbria Sports Awards Junior Team of the Year who won the Champion Schools National Cup.

Jacques received a Cumbria Talented Athlete Fund grant from Active Cumbria to help towards the costs of travel to training camps.

'The grant helped with traveling as I was finding it difficult to find the money with being a single parent. This scheme helps youngsters reach their dreams and goals. Thank you so much' - Jacques Mother - Janet
