On July 11th and 12th 2015, over 400 children aged between 7 and 11 took part in the Crooklands Casuals FC festival, which was helped by funding from the community games via Active Cumbria.
Football clubs from across Cumbria and North Lancashire joined local clubs to provide a celebratory atmosphere, based on the clubs ethos of encouraging sport in an environment which is safe and enjoyable. Although the focus was on football, other activities were provided alongside this, with face painting, a bouncy castle, music and a space for children to enjoy other games such as tag Rugby and softball. Hot and cold food was provided, with many staying behind at the end of the event to relax and socialise in the good weather.
The weekend started with a small opening ceremony, with organiser Chris Banks briefing clubs about the weekend and its intentions, before our under 7s players started the games. At the end of each age group, a closing ceremony took place, with a thank you message from the club and each child being presented with a medal and community games certificate.
Feedback over the weekend has suggested the event was more successful than we could ever have imagined. Clubs have already asked about doing another event next year and several parents commented on the good atmosphere and organisation.
There are many people to thank for this, coaches, players, spectators, Active Cumbria, but most of all, our hard working volunteers who gave up their weekend to make the event happen and ensure both the local community and football community could have an enjoyable weekend to remember!
