Dance in Cumbria is experiencing an unprecedented period of investment and development.

Together we provide and champion high quality dance in all its forms, for all children, young people, and youth dance leaders throughout the region; promoting increased access to opportunities, raising standards and improving progression routes.

Who are Exercise, Movement and Dance Partnership (EMDP)?

EMDP is the Sport England lead National Governing Body (NGB) for exercise, movement and dance.  It is a not for profit organisation dedicated to the development of exercise, movement and dance provision throughout England and the U.K.  EMDP's vision is to have 'More people enjoying health and well-being through exercise, movement and dance - for life'.

EMDP is an umbrella body for exercise, movement and dance (EMD). It works with EMD organisations to develop their specific individual disciplines and carries out developments across the whole of EMD in regards to partnership working, quality assurance and teacher and participant satisfaction and growth.

Big Dance 2012

Big Dance is set to be the ultimate dance experience in 2012! The biennial festival will feature 9 days of dance in unusual spaces throughout the UK, showing casing the diversity of dance styles in the Capital and across the country.

Big Dance is coming to every region of the UK between 18 May and 9 September 2012. Everyone is invited to be part of Big Dance 2012 - all dancers, all dance styles, all sorts of locations.

TRAINING


EMDP offers a variety of accredited movement and dance training courses which will equip students to teach adults, children and young people, older adults and chair based classes. EMDP also works with other movement and dance disciplines to offer a wider variety of training courses.

JUNE 2011: EMDP Headlines


EVENTS

  • Sportivate CanDancedance classes specifically for young people with a learning disability (including autism). The classes will run weekly each Monday from 9th January to 26th March, 4.00pm-5.00pm at James Rennie School, California Road, Carlisle, CA3 0BU. The sessions are for young people aged 14-25 years and their carers/support workers, and will be led by Alison Horn. Please circulate this information to SEN Co-ordinators or any contacts who you think might be interested.
     
    We would like these sessions to be as accessible as possible. If you feel that extra support is required to enable a young person to attend we will endeavour to provide this. If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact Lynn Fade Dance Cumbria Co-ordinator on behalf of Active Cumbria 07584 251352.
  • Foundation for Community dance: National College programme of events for all dance practitioners working in community dance contexts.
  • Kendal Tango Workshop - at Fellside Centre in Kendal for Tango practice (first Sunday of the month) and Tango classes (second Sunday of the month).  Contact Martin Anderssohn for more info.
  • Regular Classes @ the Brewery - The Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal hosts 15 weekly dance classes in house from 18 months -adults.  4 classes just for boys and groups have the opportuntity to perform in our wonderful teachre and thougout the country.  Starting from Monday 13th September contact Helen Moffitt.
  • Dance Leadership Award - Level 1- The Dance Leadership Award is a Level 1 award from Sports Leaders UK. It is for young people aged 13+ The Award can also support your GCSE PE or Dance course work, Duke of Edinburgh award & UCAS forms.
  • The Centre for Advanced Training in Dance - The scheme provides training up to the age of 18 and invites applications from anyone aged 12-16 regardless of their background. Further to this, the scheme welcomes applications from students who may have little or no dance experience alongside more experienced dancers.
  • "NEW Free Dance Lessons for Young People (12 -18) in Carlisle South with Betsy Schrader and Arran Simpson - Tuesdays from 19.00 to 21.00hr in the Botcherby Youth Cafe.  Street and Fosse Jazz fun with an Open College Network certificate at the end of the 7 weeks that whole course takes.   • NorthWestDance: The Lowry Youth Dance Partnership is a collective of organisations working in partnership with Youth Dance England and the Department for Children Schools and Families Music and Dance Scheme. Access information on current auditions, CPD traning, jobs and work experience. 
  • Dance Champions is supported by the Physical Activity Alliance in partnership with the Department of Health. The website creates a one-stop shop window for dance providers and the general public, signposting people to a whole host of dance opportinities in their local area.

  • Artefacts website for more information about Dance in Cumbria. Dance is for everyone whatever your need or ability. Not everyone wants to become a professional dancer, but dance as a hobby can contribute to your physical and mental health regardless of age, commitment or ability.

  • Moky equals a sports hall, full of people, with bass-thumping beats mixed with Latin flavour, a sprinkling of 'woops' and 'yeahs' and finish off with copious amounts of sweat...interested?

  • Youth Dance England the national organisation that champions and promotes dance for children and young people.

  • English Amateur Dancesport Association (EADA) is the national governing body for amateur dancesport (competitive Ballroom, Latin American & Sequence dancing) who also work alongside the national associations for Rock n Roll and Wheelchair dancing. Further information on EADA is available here

  • Destined to Dance a new EADA initiative which is designed to
    promote dancing to schoolchildren of all ages.

  • Dance Connect is Ulverstons Community Dance School for children from the age of 3 right up to 16+.
