In 2012, London will host the Olympic Games for the third time. It will also mark the return of the Paralympic Games to the country of their birth. Our four-year Cultural Olympiad will reach a crescendo with the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony on 27th July 2012. It starts a 60-day festival of sport and culture across the UK.
An Olympic and Paralympic first, the London 2012 Inspire programme officially recognises outstanding non-commercial projects and events inspired by the Games. Sport, culture, education, sustainability, volunteering and business opportunities all feature.

The Olympic Games and Paralympic Games are about more than sport. London 2012 is also staging a Cultural Olympiad - a series of events to showcase the UK's arts and culture to the rest of the world. Cumbria is most definately leading the way!

The London 2012 Festival is the finale of the four-year Cultural Olympiad, taking place from 21 June to 9 September 2012.
Complementing the sport events at the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Festival will be the biggest party the UK has ever seen, with a huge range of events from leading artists from all over the world including a free light and fire spectacular by Les Commandos Percus on the shores of Lake Windermere.
The Olympic and Paralympic Games is the largest mega sporting event on earth but London 2012 is about more than sport. The Games also stage arts and cultural activities through the Cultural Olympiad.
The London 2012 Cultural Olympiad is the largest cultural celebration in the history of the modern Olympic and Paralympic Games. The four year Cultural Olympiad started in September 2008 and culminates in the UK wide London 2012 Festival from the 21st June to the 9th September 2012.

'Be Inspired' the Northwest Legacy Framework, was launched in 2007, the region has embraced this vision for the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. This has been updated annually, with the latest publication 'Everyone's 2012' launched at the Northwest Annual 2012 Conference in July 2009.
The region's legacy ambitions focus on three areas: social, sporting and economic development.
The 70-day, 8,000-mile Olympic torch relay will snake across the length and breadth of the nation.
The aim is that 95% of the UK population would take no longer than an hour to travel to the relay.
At the end of each day the Olympic Flame will conclude its journey at an early evening celebration event. LOCOG and Presenting Partners will stage exciting 2 hour entertainment show and the Olympic Flame will light a cauldron marking the end of the days proceedings. Each evening show will vary with the local host community programming entertainment to showcase their culture and heritage.

June 21 - Bowness-on-Windermere, North West
Cumbria has been supporting the Torchbearer nominations process via the London 2012 'Moment to Shine' campaign. Nominations have now closed. The stories will remain anonymous as the panels select the 2,012 most inspiring people to be one of the 8,000 Torchbearers needed in total for the Olympic Torch Relay. The nominees will have around a one in 14 chance of being a Torchbearer. Successful nominees will be contacted with a conditional offer In December 2011, with Torchbearer places confirmed in February 2012.
90% of the 8,000 Torchbearer places will be made available to the public through a number of channels, including the four public nomination campaigns to be run by LOCOG, Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung. 50% of the Torchbearers will be aged between 12 and 24.
The Paralympic Torch Relay Paralympic Torch Relay will take place between the close of the Olympic Games and the start of the Paralympic Games in August 2012. Initial details have been announced with further information on Northwest engagement expected in coming months.

Places, People, Play is a £135, national initiative and is the mass participation legacy for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The Gold Challenge is a unique new charity challenge where your target is to complete 30, 20, 10 or 5 Olympic and Paralympic Sports by the end of 2012.
The Passport 2012 scheme offers residents of Eden who are competing at a national level in sport the opportunity to free access to the Council's leisure facilities.
